You don't want one that is too big or too small. On average, you should choose one that is two to four inches smaller than your actual waist, depending on how long you've worn corsetry for. The longer you've worn corsetry, the smaller your waist will get and it's easier to wear a smaller corset.

Again, if you're going to be on stage, you don't want one that's going to scratch you, give you a bad rash or anything when you're on stage.
