Are you considering therapy for your child? This video will guide you through what you need to know in selecting the right therapist for your child's needs.
My name is Michelle Bassam. I am a counselling psychologist and also the clinical manager for Harley Therapy. Today, I'm here to talk to you about different aspects of therapy and how therapy can help you as individuals or as couples.
This is a short introduction to child therapy. Many children have to go into therapy, for many different reasons. Maybe, a loved on has lost, maybe someone has died from cancer or heart attack, and they have experienced this.
Or maybe they have experienced some other trauma in their lives. It is very important that through their therapy, the child is made to feel very comfortable and safe. And there is a variety of ways in which to embark on this.
With very young children, it can be better to deal through art or through play. For slightly older children, they may wish to discuss things with you. And for teenagers and adolescents, it would need to be dealt with differently.
Teenagers and adolescents do find it very difficult to discuss things, in the family unit. So, sometimes, this is where therapy can actually help. But, it's very much a case of, is it child therapy or is it therapy for adults? So, finding a good child therapist, maybe the right thing to do is to go through your GP practice or a nurse at the GP practice.
Or your health visitor may know someone who would be recommended to you and be right for your child. Hopefully, this has been of some help to you. Thank you. .
