How To Choose A Wedding Veil. They are traditional, but not essential to wedding ceremony. However, we guide you through choosing a wedding veil that works for you and your dress.

Step 1: Should I wear a Veil?

First of all you must decide if you really want to wear a veil on your wedding day. In many cultures, the lifting of the wedding veil symbolized the groom taking possession of the wife, either as lover or as property, or the revelation of the bride to the groom by her parents for approval.

Veils are very traditional. They are more often used at church weddings than civil ceremonies... but you're not expected to wear one. If you're not sure, try one on.

Step 2: Choose your dress first

Choose your dress first and then accessorise with a veil, not the other way round. The dress is the main attraction and the veil is there to complement the dress, not distract from it. It is difficult to find a dress to match a veil but is much easier to find a veil that matches a dress. So don't set your heart on a veil before you have found the dress of your dreams.

Step 3: What type of veil?

As well as different lengths ,Veils come in different types.
You may decide that you want a short, single layer veil. This is worn at the back of the head, it's not designed to be worn over the face.

Two layer veils have a layer that stays at the back and a shorter section which can come forward over the face. This is called the blusher.

Step 4: Should I Cover My Face?

It's your choice whether or not to wear the blusher covering the face.

Some brides prefer to have the blusher pulled back and have layers of the veil frame their face.

Other brides like to wear the blusher down. It's a very traditional look. Plus the blusher can obscure a wobbly lip as the bride walks up the aisle and hide the wedding tears!

Step 5: Plain or Patterned?

If your dress is very intricate you will want a plain veil. Likewise if you have a plain dress then a decorated veil can accessorise the dress easily. Most shops have a good selection of veils as they are still very common for brides. Try veils on with your dress and make sure they feel right AND complement your overall look.
