How to choose an electric guitar. First thing is you really should go down to the shop and try them out. What you want to account for when trying out your guitar is what kind of amp it's going through because they have a great effect on the sound you're getting.

So you've got to try out different types of guitars with the same amp with the same settings so then you'll know what you're looking for. Most people try to get a guitar that sounds very similar to the ones that are used by the people they admire as players. Lots of people will go for Gibson's because of Mick Ronson, and maybe people will go for Strats because of Hendrix.

The fundamental difference between those two types of guitar is the Strat has got a whammy bar. You get telecasters which are basically a Strat without the whammy bar. The whammy bar allows you to dip and bring the pitch of the chord back without having to move it on the fret board so you can go.

They've usually got a slightly thinner sort of more biting sound. The trouble with the use of a whammy bar, of course, is that they can go quite out of tune rapidly. It's just a little bit out now.

The other major make is that of Gibson. They are a heavier guitar and they've got a deeper timbre to them. What you want to be aware of is the fact that they can be really easily changed by switching between pick-ups.

You can get that thin biting sound as well. There are different styles of guitar within each of those makes. There's a Gibson SG which tries to sound like Telecasters and Strats.

Also, you get models which are cheaper versions of the same main make. Epiphone make Gibson imitations and there are very many Strat imitations, absolutely loads. The other thing you can do if you want to play with a Strat is get a lock so you can lock off the guitar strings so it won't go so badly out of tune when you lose the whammy bar.

So don't take the advice of the guys that are trying to sell you one in the shop exclusively because you've got to live with it. So make sure you're happy and take your time. Don't feel pressured.
