How To Choose Calligraphy Ink
How to Choose Calligraphy Ink: This Video Jug video features a calligraphy expert from London. He demonstrates the differences between three types of calligraphy ink: bottled, wash, and Japanese ink sticks. With the helpful instruction in this video, you will have no trouble choosing the right calligraphy ink for your project.
Hi I am Veiko from the Calligraphy Studio in London. What is the best ink to use for Calligraphy? I have here a range of different inks.
For convenience bottled ink is the easiest to use. It is water or acrylic based and can be used straight out of the bottle without any dilution. Although acrylic inks come in a limited number of colours gouache is preferable if you want a wider choice of colour. They can also be mixed very easily using a pallet, a brush and a little water.
Over here I have some Japanese ink sticks. These are very high quality and are manufactured by hand from natural materials using a traditional process. Due to the animal based glue they contain, they remain waterproof, even when used with coloured washes. They are available in a range of blacks from grey-blue to brown, a limited range of colours are available too. The Ink is made by grinding the inkstick on a special inkstone with some water until the required consistency is reached. As the tonal range and thickness of the ink can be varied they offer calligraphers the most control over their work.
