How To Choose Calligraphy Paper
Calligraphy is a way of beautiful writing. This videojug tutorial aims to help you decide which paper best suits your requirements for calligraphy.
Hi I am Veiko from Calligraphy Studio in London. I am going to show you how to choose the best paper for use with your calligraphy.
When you are a beginner and need paper to practice layout paper is a good choice as it is inexpensive and not too absorbent. If you want an even cheaper option then normal copy paper will do.
When you become more skilled and start working on finished pieces then you will want to try better quality paper. Hot pressed aquarelle paper used by watercolour artists is a good choice. Different manufacturers produce different weights and qualities. You can write some simple letters to test if the paper is suitable for calligraphy. See if your writing bleeds or if it is absorbed by the paper, the surface may also be difficult to write on.
When you have found a paper which works for you then keep a sample of it for future reference.
Hand made paper is often difficult to write with but it can be used with very narrow calligraphy nibs such as those used for copperplate.
