Oh dear, where DO I begin? Firstly, the method you used of surface area stocking density is both out dated and useless in the modern aquaruim, because of the use of filters in the tank, so the aquarist does not have to rely on the air/water interface to disperse the CO2 in the water, and to also gas off any harmful ammonia. The correct, and modern way to calculate stocking density is to have roughly one inch of fish per gallon of water, or one cm of fish per L of water.

Please note that Betta splendens (siamiese fighting fish) are NOT sutiable for many aquaria, as they are prone to having their fins nipped by other fish, which is painful and stressful for them.

Despite all the comments there is no getting away from the fact that experience is paramount. Still learning after 40 years of tropical fishkeeping. Seek out a local hobbyist club and/or specialist shop (ignore any shop with any sign of dead, dying or diseased fish). No use just throwing in gravel, water and heater into a tank and expecting results. Research your subject before you start, for your fishes sake.

I am a budding aquarist and thought some of these clips were very useful and easily understood. The only down side is that although I feel i am making an effort to research and learn about caring for fish and tank, is that there are always people that forget they were once beginners too. No-one can know everything and have experience at once, it is a learning curve . so to all the people that give advice and encouragement I thank you. To the rest...please try to remember you were once a beginner too (and take your head out your ****).
