A good pair of men's shorts can be very versatile, and image consultant Mandy Lehto gives great recommendations for selecting men's khaki shorts for any casual situation, including tips on what to wear with them whether for the casual Friday at work or a barbeque at a friend's house.

If you're going to buy one pair of shorts this summer, if you need versatility, I would recommend something like this, which comes under many names, it can be a khaki short, it can be a chino short. This will go up or down depending on what you need it to do. You can dress this down by wearing it with flip-flops and probably a t-shirt un-tucked; you could wear that with a linen shirt over top of a tank top, again, a linen shirt un-tucked, a pair of Birkenstocks, a pair of casual flip-flops, and it will go down and be much more casual that way.

You could also wear this in a slightly more smart casual way by putting on some nice quality leather flip-flops, maybe in a nude tan leather color. Put a belt matching the shoes as well. No socks in the sandals.

You could put a linen shirt tucked in, for example, if you've got the good proportions to be able to wear a belt you might tuck the shirt in. And it gives it a little more formality if you tuck the shirt in rather than leaving it hanging down and probably sticking with a neutral color scheme if you're going for a slightly more sophisticated look, maybe a soft white, maybe black, then thinking about matching the black shoes with that and that, you could wear to quite a nice summer barbeque, summer parties, that type of thing. Even to the office, if your office permits a smart casual short look.

These could also be a great look for wearing to the office on a smart casual Friday if your office permits. I would still keep the look a little more upscale by putting it with good quality, maybe men's espadrilles, putting a nice matching belt, and always bearing in mind that tucking in, if it suits the shape of your body, will be slightly more formal than leaving it un-tucked. One final point: this style will suit most shapes for blokes.

They've got the slight bit of pleating in the front which will be also good if you've got a fuller middle. If somebody's got a slightly slimmer build, or what we call a finer bone structure, they might be better to go for a slightly more tailored. The fabric is slightly thinner on these, and they're a little bit shorter as well.

So that's something to take into consideration. We don't want to wear something that's too short in a tailored short, depending on your height and I would say, probably, this style of short should finish just slightly above the knee. And those are some tips for choosing khaki shorts. .
