How To Choose The Right Drawing Tools

VideoJug's professional artist shows us how to choose the right drawing tools to make each piece a work of art. Whether you need charcoal pencils, graphite pencils or any other drawing tool; this video will give you the answers.

Step 1: You will need

  • graphite pencils
  • charcoal pencils
  • charcoal sticks
  • paper

Step 2: Graphite Pencils

You can tell the hardness of the graphite in a pencil by the markings on its side.
H pencils are made of a hard lead, which produces a fine, light line when used.
HB pencils are more neutral, and are the most popular type of pencils used.
The higher the B number, the softer the lead of the pencil.
When shading, hold your pencil further back, relax your hand and use the side of the graphite.

Step 3: Charcoal pencils

There are two types of charcoal pencils.
One where you would use a craft knife to sharpen it.
The other where it is exposed when it is removed from its paper wrapping.
Charcoal is very easy to blend when using it, it is rich and dense, yet can be used to draw nice, fine lines.

Step 4: Charcoal sticks

Willow charcoal is much softer than any other form, and isn't compressed into pencils.
It is extremely fluid and good for quick sketches or large life drawings. It can be used on its side for big and bold marks.
Or by using a thinner piece, you can produce a fine, more detailed lines.
But be careful, it is extremely delicate and snaps easily under too much pressure.
