How To Chop An Onion

This short tutorial gives expert advice on the fine art of chopping an onion into fine, even pieces. VideoJug can't stop your eyes watering but can help you become a professional in onion chopping.

You Will Need

  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Sharp Knife
  • 1 Chopping Board
  • 1 Swimming Goggles

Step 1:

Introduction

I’m going to show you an easy way of chopping an onion into fine even pieces.

Step 2:

Top & Tails

Place your onion on a chopping board, take a sharp knife and cut the shoot off the top and the root from the bottom.

TOP TIP: To stop yourself from crying when chopping an onion, try wearing swimming goggles. This stops the scent inducing gases from the onion from coming into contact with your eye.

Step 3:

Peel The Onion

Remove the dry outer skin, and then peel the paper under skin away with your fingers.

Step 4:

Cut

Put the onion, root side down on the chopping board, hold it steady with one hand and with your other slice finely cut across the onion. Do not cut all the way down, Leave about a centimeter at the bottom. The slices need to be held together at this stage.

Step 5:

Turn and Cut

Turn the onion on to its side. Grip it carefully holding all the slices together then slice across the onion again. Finely diced pieces will fall away as you do this. Keep going until you reach the unsliced end. You can chop up the remaining centimeter of the onion; use it in stock, sandwiches, also right away.

Step 6:

Chopped Onion

TOP TIP: To get rid of any onion smells on your hand rub your fingers over some stainless steel. This really works.

Actually, onions gives off a little bit of acidic gas which goes to the eyes and causes them -to tear - it is NOT the scent NOR does it go into the nose in order for the eyes to tear. To prevent the eyes from tear, hold a piece of bread in the mouth - the acidic gas will absorb into the bread before it reaches the eyes. The goggles are completely ridiculous!

The stainless steel really does work, but I just went out and bought a stainless steel bar that is in the shape of a soap bar and I just add soap and wash with it. It's amazing!!! I just heard of the googles a few weeks before seeing this, and it is the gasses that make you tear up, not the smell.
