How To Clean Gold
Videojug have come along to Wave Contemporary Jewellery, just off London's Carnaby Street, to get some expert advice on the best ways to clean your gold jewellery so that you can put the Va va voom back into your favourite pieces the professional way.
Step 1: Cleaning with boiling water
Cleaning with boiling water and washing up liquid. This method is a very effective way of cleaning gold. It also works very well for diamond rings but if you're planning to clean rings with other types of stone, check with a jeweller to make sure they won't be damaged by heat.
Put a small amount of washing-up liquid in the container and add the boiling water giving it a mix. Place the gold jewellery in the liquid and almost immediately the heat and the soap will remove all the grease and grime. Use the toothbrush to give it a light clean, then carefully dry it using the kitchen roll and you should see immediate results.
Step 2: Cleaning Matt Gold
The matt gold finish is becoming increasingly fashionable and presents a different challenge as the problem is often that it loses the matt finish and becomes shiny. This can be solved by using a common green kitchen scowering cloth, commonly known as a Scotch Bright Pad. Make sure you rub the cloth in the same direction so you get a uniform result - don't rub in circles. It is important not to use a scotch bright pad on white gold as it can often be rhodium plated and you risk scratching it off. But on normal matt gold this will make the matt finish as good as new.
If you don't have the time or the patience to use any of our methods for cleaning either silver or gold, you can also have them cleaned at a jewellers using these methods or an ultrasonic cleaner. You can also find other ways of cleaning both silver and gold using common household products such as baking soda, toothpaste and even ketchup elsewhere on the Videojug site. If you are unsure of any of these methods consult a jeweller.
