Hi, I'm Cherie Birks from Cool Diamonds in London, Hatton Garden. I'm a goldsmith here, and I've been a goldsmith for nearly ten years, and I trained for that in Australia. Currently, we sell diamonds mounted in platinum 18-karat white gold and 18-karat yellow gold.
I'm here to demonstrate polishing and resizing of rings and diamond jewellery. To clean sterling silver jewellery, we would just use mild detergent and some hot water. Again, there's an array of different products which you can use that are silver dips which do remove the tarnish from your silver.
I, personally, am not a big fan of those because often once the tarnish is removed and you've rinsed off the silver dip, it does tarnish worse than it was the first time afterwards. So to avoid getting the tarnish on your jewellery, I'd wear it regularly, and store it in a Ziploc bag because the air is actually what tarnishes the silver. So to clean, you would just use warm water, dish detergent, and a bit of ammonia just to degrease it.
Just get an old toothbrush and really get into any cracks or crevice or joins or small areas. Just really brush them out. Just give it a good rinse, and then rinse it in warm water just to get off any of the detergent remaining.
Dry with a soft cotton cloth, make sure it doesn't scratch it up too much, and you can just go over it with a polishing cloth. That's how to clean sterling silver jewellery. .
