Mark Barlow provides his insight to the six reasons why a slice occurs in a golf swing. By correcting these basic mistakes, you can ensure that your golf slice can be corrected for a better golf game.
Today, I am going to tell you about how to cure a golf slice which is where the ball spins from left to right in a direction you don't want it to. The first cause is where your left hand is rotated too far round to the left when the club face is square and for more information, please refer to the video series, How to Hold a Golf Club. To cure this, we rotate our left hand from too far left to more on top of the club.
If the club shaft on the ground represents the target line, another cause for a slice is that the club comes from outside the target line, across the ball to inside the target line. To cure the slice caused by this swing path, the best thing to do is from the top of the back swing, keep our shoulders closed for as long as possible as we come down to hit the ball. This ensures that the club moves from slightly inside the target line, back to square on the ball, then back inside again.
Cause three is where the club is brought too quickly inside on the back swing. The way to cure this is to keep your right arm straight, and ensure the club you are holding follows the target line for as long as possible. Cause four is where my upper body slides too far ahead of the golf ball on the downswing.
The solution to this is to imagine the left cheek is in line with the golf ball, throughout the whole swing. Cause five is where too much weight is transferred to the right hand side of the body making it impossible to swing back to the left hand side on the way through. So the cure to this is to make sure we only transfer about 80% of our weight to the right hand side on the backswing.
To get an idea of how much weight you should be transferring to your back foot, just imagine skipping a stone across a lake and the weight transfer is actually very similar to a golf swing. Cause six is not achieving a full 90-degree shoulder turn and the reason for this is because we tend to swing with our arms and don't actually turn the body, and this is what it looks like. So the solution to this is to make sure we achieve a nice full 90-degree shoulder turn and to do this, we simply think about taking our right shoulder and pulling it behind our head.
So, the cures for the golf slicing clue, strengthening your grip, making sure that shoulders stay as closed as possible on the downswing, making sure that the club follows this target line, imagining your left cheek stays on the ball throughout the golf swing, making sure you transfer your weight like you are skimming a stone across a lake, and finally making sure you complete a full 90-degree shoulder turn by pulling your shoulder behind your head. And that's how to cure a golf slice. .
