Panic attacks are often a mixture of thoughts and emotions resulting from the big rush of energy moving up through your body. One of the key aspects of panic attacks is the sense of energy being up here, being very stuck in your head, energy coming up here, heart racing. But really, the sense of self has really lifted.

A great little tip to deal with panic attacks, if you can bring your awareness to it and catch yourself in the middle of it is actually very simple. And that is to take your awareness to your feet. If possible, if you're standing on the ground, stand on the ground, get really grounded and take your awareness to your feet.

Hold your awareness in your feet. As the energy wants to rush up again, awareness back to your feet. Hold yourself in your feet, grounded and stay with that.

Another key characteristic of a panic attack is the breath. The breath moves very high, maybe right up into your throat. Great opportunity within a panic attack is to notice where your breathing is and, whenever possible, bring it down.

Bring it down to what I call a soft belly breath or yogic breathing which you can look up on the Internet. So breathing with a full belly, bring the energy down while your attention is down in your feet.

These are two physical ways of dealing with the attack, but a third way is what's going on in your thoughts.

Very often, within a panic attack is a cycling of thoughts and these thoughts, if you hang on to them, very often just cascade out of control. So wherever possible, if you can, start to think about something else, if you're able. In any case, focus on the breathing, keep your feet on the floor, bring your awareness to the floor, these are great ways of dealing with that.

And of course, if you are suffering many panic attacks this could be a sign of a serious medical condition and it's certainly worth talking to your doctor about this.
