Amount of Peat

They showed us that this is the best way to cut peat. It’s been cut like this for hundreds of years and we cut our peat every year. When it’s cut we dry them and take them back to the distillery for our flavoring in the kettle. We use about three to four tons per week of peat at Bowmore.

Peat Cutter

The peat cutter that I’m using at the moment is probably about 100 years-old. It has been handed down through the years to everybody. It’s still going strong. This part here is a course hardman. The shaft is made out of an old sieve of a wash buck that we use to have at Bowmore Distillery.
We have our bakers. When you pull your peats up it’s called a peat stock. You have a big, big peat stock and you have it there. We go down every so often probably about once a week or every ten days to take a load of peats down to the kettle. We use at the kettle.
