How To Dance Samba
Learn how to dance the Samba with this easy to follow step-by-step guide. You'll be looking like a pro in no time.
Hi. I'm, Theresa Roche, and I'm, Phillip Sherwood, and we are going to share some latin and ballroom dances with you today. Woo! We've been dancing the samba.
The fun carnival dance from Brazil. Characterized by quick foot work, by pelvic tilt, and lots of hip action. And we're going to get you doing the sizzling samba too.
Phillip will now go through the timing and lets get started. The timing for the samba is slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick . And you'll notice I'll be using the toes rather than my heels to demonstrate this dance.
Toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe. Slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick. Ladies it's your turn.
You're now going back. Your weight is on your right foot and your going to go back on the toe with your left foot. Just use the ball of your foot and don't put your heels down.
So, you're going back on your left foot. Toe, bring the right toe to your left foot and go toe, toe. And that frees up your right foot.
Step forward between the man's legs with a toe, toe on your right. Toe on your left. Toe on your right.
Back on your left again. Toe, toe, toe, toe, toe, toe. And you'll notice the
in my hips caused by the toe, toe, toe.
The trick is not to put those heels down. Just transfer weight. We're now going to do a step called the back samba whisk.
So, we're starting with the weight on our left leg. And we're going to take a step to the side. And we're going to place all of the left foot behind the right leg.
Put your weight on it. And then replace the weight back to the right leg stepping to the side and then this time taking the ball of the right foot placing it behind the left foot. Put your weight on it.
And then replace the weight back to the left foot and taking a step to the side. Now, ladies you weight is on your right foot. You're going to take a step to the left on your left foot.
Bring the toe of your right foot and the ball of the foot behind the heel of your left foot. Don't put the heel down and press into the floor and then press back again into that left foot. And ladies you will notice this happens.
Again, your hips move. Now, take a step to the right on your right foot. Bring the toe neatly behind the heel of your right foot.
Press that left foot into the floor without putting the heel down and press the weight back into the right supporting foot again. And when we speed it up it looks like this. The back is acting as a propeller.
So, we hope you enjoy dancing the samba.
