How To Deal With Cluster Flies In House
Flies of all kinds are obnoxious and distressing. Learn how to deal with cluster flies here, where to find them, and why they behave so oddly.
There are many different flies which cause distress in the ordinary household. However, cluster flies are one of the stranger ones. You'll often only notice them on the upper levels of your house, often slow moving, looking a bit dopey, not flying much; then you go into the loft space and find thousands of them up there.
The cluster fly lives a strange life in that it lays its eggs in the soil, the larvae hatch out, then burrow into earthworms. As the temperature starts dropping, as it gets towards autumn, these flies come out of the soil in the thousands and go to the highest warm place, which is often your loft. Which is why you'll often find them coming out of light fittings, then you'll see them dopey wandering around in upstairs rooms.
Now in the early stages, a normal fly spray would take care of these adults, and then just hoover them up. However, if you find them in large numbers in your loft space, they'll be there hibernating and overwintering, and then they'll come out again in the following March or April time, as they come out of their hibernation. If they are in very, very large numbers, you can try hoovering them up yourself in the loft or you may need a professional pest control company to come in and carry out insecticidal treatments, fairly carefully in the loft space, because you don't want to contaminate your water sources or your water tanks.
There is no way that properties can be proofed against these insects, they get into very, very modern buildings, they'll get in around double glazing units. Sometimes, we will spray onto the outside of window ledges to help get control. You can't eradicate them completely, and if you're in an area where they are a serious problem it does come down to control rather than complete eradication.
And if you do need that control, then get in touch with CleanKill or any other professional pest control company.
