counsellor Hillie Marshall talks through various tips and advice for parents on dealing with their children leaving home. Deal with empty nest syndrome the VideoJug way .
Step 1: Preparing the way
If they're leaving for university then you've hopefully had time to prepare - making sure they know how to wash their clothes, cook for themselves and appreciate the value of money.
If you don't know until the last moment - don't panic, take it on the chin and try to be enthusiastic. Don't make them worried, just give them your support.
Step 2: Your kids thoughts
Both you and your children should start thinking of this as a big adventure. They're feeling terrified, as are you, but try to tell them that the unknown is worse than the reality.
Step 3: The kids left behind
It can probably be more traumatic for the child left behind - they no longer have their playmate and friend. They may be feeling quite insecure now - so spend some time with them, discuss what's going on with them. Point out you'll all meeting up again soon enough.
Step 4: No shrines
You now have the chance to go tidy up that messy bedroom - so get in there and throw away all the rubbish!
Step 5: Providing a base
Everybody needs some kind of security. You can provide that by offering your home as a permanent base, for whenever they need or want to return home.
Step 6: Filling the space
You now have a lot more time - life may feel a little empty now. So try taking up some hobbies, get in touch with old friends and even make some new friends. Spend more time with your partner and get to know them again.
