How To Deal With Facial Hair

Beauty therapist Victoria Nash shows VideoJug how to deal with facial hair, by removing or disguising the hair on your lip, chin or face. Follow these simple steps and deal with your facial hair in no time.

Step 1: Waxing

Cleanse the face with diluted surgical spirit solution to remove grease and make-up from the skin. Victoria uses hot wax for facial hair but follow the instructions on the packet of the wax you are using. You may need to apply a pre-wax oil so the wax doesn't stick to the skin. Apply the wax with a spatula against the direction of hair growth, on one side of the upper lip. Allow the wax to dry but don't let it go solid. Press it into the hair, and flick up the edge with your fingernail before quickly pulling the whole piece of wax off the skin. Immediately press down onto your skin to ease any discomfort. Repeat on the other side and finally on the centre of the lip. Apply an antiseptic cream to minimise infection and calm the area.

Step 2: Permanent options

Waxing is the best temporary option to remove facial hair. Electrolysis is the most effective permanent option, as Victoria doesn't recommend laser therapy for the face as it can encourage hair re-growth.

Step 3: Bleaching

Bleaching is a temporary solution to facial hair which will disguise rather than remove hair. Avoid bleach if you have a lot of upper lip hair as it may turn the hair yellow.
Facial hair bleach usually comes as a powder and cream, which should be mixed together before applying. Clean the area with diluted surgical spirit or witch hazel. Dry the skin and apply the bleach in a thick layer. Leave on for 10 minutes before removing with damp cotton wool pads. Finally, apply a light antiseptic cream.
