How To Deal With Pain
British actress Clare Buckfield suffered all kinds of injuries whilst taking part in TV's Dancing On Ice. Here she finds out how to treat those bumps and bruises with advice from Dr Rob Hicks GP Broadcaster and Author.
Step 1: Dealing with pain:
New stats shows that nearly 4out of 10 people in the UK suffered from pain, headaches, backaches, basically all kinds of problems. Research from Tesco Pharmacy also shows that many of us are bemused when it comes to dealing with these problems and we don’t really know what to do.Well, one person who knows all about dealing with pain is Clare Buckfield, the star of “Dancing On Ice” for many weeks she was thrown around an ice skating rink, suffering all kinds of bumps and bruises, Clare thank you very much for coming in today.
Step 2: Meet Claire Buckfield:
You’re welcome.
Now what we are going to do is you are going to tell us what ails you and our top doctor expert Dr. Rob Hicks is going to offer you all the advice and tell you what to do. So tell me what about what your first problem was.
Step 3: What's the problem?
You’re welcome.
Now what we are going to do is you are going to tell us what ails you and our top doctor expert Dr. Rob Hicks is going to offer you all the advice and tell you what to do. So tell me what about what your first problem was.
OK, I think my first problem…we will start with an easy one we will work gently, was probably headaches actually. I could not get use to the spinning and I had constant headaches.
Step 4: Dealing with headaches.
Now using an appropriate scale to do like you do with an ice skating, can you tell us how much it hurt.
OK, on a scale out of 6, I probably give that a 2.
Over now to Dr. Rob Hicks for some advice.
And of course over the counter pain killers like paracetamol or ibuprofen will treat most headaches very successfully. Pretty important to try and rest and relax because stress will make headaches much worse and ideally, if you can pinpoint what is triggering the headaches do your best to avoid this.
Step 5: Dealing with muscle pain.
Now, what other kinds of problems did you suffer?
I think probably the midway I had a pulled calf muscle and a pulled thigh muscle. So that was quite painful and that needed a lot of attention.
Now on the same kind of scale how would you rate it? Clare Buckfield: I guess I would rate that as a 3.Man: A bit more painful it was.
Yes.
OK, Dr. Rob, one more time, what should we do?Dr. Rob Hicks: Well we use the “RICE” therapy. That is “R” for rest, “I” for ice, “C” for compression, and “E” for elevation. On the ice component you can use a bag of frozen vegetables like sweet corn for example, wrap it in a towel, and press it against the inflamed joint or the inflamed muscle. Now, paracetamol or ibuprofen will relieve the pain but ibuprofen is probably your winner here because it also calms down inflammation.
Step 6: Dealing with extreme pain
OK, we’ve had headaches, we’ve had pulled muscles, time now for the biggie. What was the worst injury you had?
Well, I think I’ve saved the best for last, the worst injury that I had was two fractured ribs. And how does that score on the pain chart?
Oh, I’ve got to give that a 6, absolutely.
Well, fractured ribs they can really be very painful. Ideally you want to rest as much as possible to give the bones a chance to heal properly. And of course, while time is the healer for fractured ribs, keep yourself out of pain with a good pain killer. Now, paracetamol might be enough, ibuprofen might be enough or you may need something stronger like codeine. And indeed this is where your doctor or indeed your pharmacist can be of great help in helping you to identify what is the best pain killer for your problem. Now, of course, Tesco Pharmacy have published a very helpful booklet to help you through the process of deciding what pain killers might be appropriate whether you’ve got broken ribs or indeed headache, period pains, or joint and muscle aches. And you can get them free just by coming to the pharmacy. You also of course, get an excellent advice from your pharmacist.
Man: Dr. Rob, thank you very much indeed. Clare, thank you very much, you feel that you have learned something?
It has been very educational.
Marvelous stuff, Clare, and I will move to the ice skating rink where I am going to show here my triple axle with a double split. Goodbye.
