Step 3: The Horrible Bit

Rinse the area with cool water
Step 5: Sponge with detergent
Sponge the area with a solution of warm water and wool detergent or carpet cleaner
Step 6: Rinse
Rinse thoroughly with warm water using a dab and blot method
Step 7: Killing the odour
To get rid of the last remnants of the stain and to tackle the smell make a paste of baking soda and warm water and cover the effected area. Sprinkle some dry baking soda on the area surrounding the stain. Return a few hours later when the paste has had time to dry out then give it a scrape and vacuum up the dry powder. It also helps to leave a few saucers of white vinegar around the room to absorb any remaining odours in the air.
Step 8: Repeat if necessary
The effectiveness of the method depends on the nature of the vomit so you may need to repeat some of the steps.
