How To Decorate A Tree In Traditional Style

Timothy Dunn at Timothy Dunn Flowers shows us how to adorn your tree in the traditional manner. Decorate your Christmas tree traditionally with VideoJug's help.

Step 1: You will need

  • An assortment of baubles and ornaments in different colours and sizes
  • Clear LED Christmas lights
  • A roll of red organza - this is an alternative to tinsel, you could also use ribbon.
  • lenghts of wire

Step 2: Choose your lights

Unwind your string of lights. LED lights are a better option than regular fairy lights. If one LED bulb goes out, the rest will still work unlike fairy lights. Although they are more expensive, they are much more energy efficient and safer as they stay cool to the touch. They will also last longer so you won't have to buy a new set every year.

Step 3: Attach lights to the tree

Find the end of your string of lights and twist a piece of wire around the last bulb. Wind the wire around the top of the tree to secure the lights to the tree. You may need to stand on a stool or step ladder to reach the top of the tree.
Separate the wires at intervals and push the branches of the tree between them to ensure the lights stay in place.

Step 4: Drape the organza

Take a roll of red organza and gather it together all the way along the material. You could cut the fabric in half to before doing this to make it go further but Timothy is using the whole roll for a more dramatic effect. Wind a piece of wire around the end of the material and attach it to the top of the tree. Drape the organza in a spiral around the tree all the way to the bottom. Lay it on roughly at first and then tidy it up once it is in place. Twist a piece of wire around the end and secure it to the tree.

Step 5: Hang baubles and ornaments

Thread some wire through the bauble or ornament and twist it onto a branch. Timothy will be using red, green and gold baubles. Hang all of one colour on first so that you can make sure they are evenly spaced. Place the smaller baubles at the top and the larger ones near the bottom of the tree. Add the next colours in the same way.

Step 6: Tidy up

Now tidy up the organza making sure the baubles and lights are not hidden beneath the fabric.
