Coupe is one of the first steps in ballet. With this three-minute tutorial, it will be even easier to master it and show it to your friends.
Okay, so I'm going to show you a coupe and coupe means a cutting step. So, it's more of a linking step and a precursor to doing other steps. I'll show you a simple coupe.
Coupe is positioned just above the bone of the ankle here, this is your position, and you would cut to another coupe and up through demi-pointe into coupe, so this would just be coupe behind, coupe in front, just this way. You can also do this step in a jump. So, you could coupe, coupe, coupe and again or in succession that way.
You could also put a coupe before other steps like coupe assemblé. So, if I was to do coupe assemblé, I could start with a back foot and I cut the foot away and assemblé. So, that would be coupe, cut, assemblé and that is just a simple coupe.
Let's have a look at the coupe step a little bit closer. So, if we start with the leg just above the ankle bone here ad we do it in a slow type of movement and you bring the foot up to the ankle each time, through demi-pointe and down. And then, you're hoping to achieve this movement when you're jumping.
So, to start your coupe, so you're aiming to go up to the legs crossed high in the air before you land in a demi plie. And that's how to do your coupe step in ballet. .
