How To Do A Salchow Jump

The Salchow jump is one of the basic jumps in figure skating. In this video, an ice skating coach teaches you how to do a Salchow jump properly.

I am going to guide you through a basic jump which is called the Salchow. This jump is performed from a backward entry. You can perform crosscuts into this on a circle, hold backward outside edge, step forwards, and turn a three-turn.

Once you have turned the three, you are on the backward inside edge. You need good check, good control, on this backward inside edge. So, if you are doing this taking off from your left foot, you will hold your left arm in front of you, your right arm checked back and your whole of your right side checked back.

As you go to jump, you will strongly bend your knee and you will take your free leg around in a swooping motion and you will start to rotate through into the jump and the bending of the knee, you will come up and you will spring off of your toe in a counter-clockwise direction to perform either a one rotation, a double rotation, or a triple rotation. The demonstration we will show you now will be a single Salchow jump. And that is how to do a Salchow.
