How To Do A Sit Spin
Watch ice skating coach Doreen Hoppe as she talks you through a sit spin. The technical specialist and an assistant will show you two different ways to enter into this beautiful figure skating element.
I'm going to talk you through how to perform a sit spin. There are two ways of entering into the spin. You can either do this from an inside tree and step forwards into the spin or from back crosscuts in a circle and step forwards into the spin.
The skater will perform back crosscuts in a circle. Now, it's quite important on this that on your last back crosscut, your upper body is offset to your bottom half, so you have a windup position. So, your left arm would be in thrown front of you, your right arm will be back, whilst you're standing on the right inside edge with your free leg back behind you.
Then, you are going to step out of that circle onto the left forward outside which is then going to be your spinning foot. So, in effect, you're winding up to unwind into the spin to generate the speed to form a spinning motion. Step forward onto left, forwards outside, to start the spinning motion.
The spin will have to be centred so your weight will have to be over your standing leg. You lean forwards, take your leg out to the side, take it around in a circle, bring it through in front of you and bend your knee strongly that you're standing on. The further you go down in the sit spin, the more you lean forward.
As you lean forwards, place your left hand on your left skating knee and your right arm over your free leg. This will be your spinning motion in your sit spin. From the sit position, you will then push yourself up on your skating knee into an upright position where you'll perform a few more rotations in the basic upright position.
You will push with your left foot out onto your right back outside for your exit out of the spin. And that's how to perform a sit spin. .
