How To Do A Soubresaut

This is an instructional video explaining how to do a soubresaut in ballet. A soubresaut is a sudden spring or jump from both feet, landing on both feet in the same position as they started.

Now, I'm going to teach you how to do a soubresaut. Soubresaut, again, is another allegro step, and it's a very sweet little step, while you squeeze your legs together in the air, but first, let me just show you what the position is that we want to achieve in the air. So, here we are in a very, very, tight fifth.

The idea of this fifth position, when you get into it, is that you want to make sure that when you do this position, you see only one foot, but you want to see two heels: you want to see this heel here, the back of that heel, and this heel here. So, we want to see one foot, but two heels, and the way to do that is to really squeeze very tightly at the top of your thighs. Of course, as you can see, Rhiann is really stretching through her legs, and reaching through with her toes.

Look what happens if she doesn't really lengthen her legs. Relax a moment, Rhiann. So, you want to try and avoid this gap here, and you want to try and avoid the sagging knees, but look now what happens when she lifts up her knees, squeezes her thighs together, and really reaches long.

That's the idea, so we're off that one foot with two heels moving forward. Okay, so that's the position in the air. You can practice that position at any point, so let's just do a little rising fifth, or releve.

So, she's just going to do that and practice that same squeeze, and really lengthening the legs, strong, pointed ankles, stretched ankles, and then come down. So this is the position of the legs in the air. Now this time, she's going to do it as a jump.

So, we're going to do demi-plie, and squeeze. So you see, in the air, she mimicked exactly that position that she tried on the floor, and then again on the releve, and now you see it as a saute. Let's see it one more time, plie and soubresaut.

And this time, we're going to do it with pretty arms as well, so we'll have our arms in bras bas, and, soubresaut, soubresaut, soubresaut. So there we have it, the soubresaut.
