How To Do A Telepathy Test

Telephone telepathy is when you think about someone just before they phone you, or you hear the phone ring and instinctively ‘know' who is calling. Experiments into whether this is caused by telepathy have been conducted at Goldsmiths College, University of London. This film will show you how to perform these tests at home.

The test

Choose one person to be a receiver and four people to be senders, and make sure that the receiver is in a different location from the senders. At a pre-specified time, randomly choose one of the senders to make a call to the receiver. You can use a throw of dice to select a sender randomly. When the receiver gets the phone call from the nominated sender, they have to say which sender they think is calling before answering the phone. The receiver then takes the call to find out whether they were right or not.

Repeat the experiment as many times as you can, with as many different groups of people as you can. Keep records of how many right and wrong answers were given. In the experiments at Goldsmiths College each test group performed 10 trials, and then another test group was used. Statistically, the receiver should choose the right person one in four times. If you are getting a significantly higher number than this, it would be considered a statistically significant result, and may indicate the involvement of a telepathic link.
