How To Do Face Painting: The Monster
Face painting is one of the most fun and popular activities on the children's party circuit today. Here's how to do a scary monster face.
Step 1: Get Green
Cover the whole face in green with a moist sponge, and let dry.
Step 2: Wrinkle Up
Make this monster angry. Have your subject wrinkle his face, and follow the wrinkles with a blackened medium brush to create furrowed brows. Paint over the eyebrows with black-- starting under the eyebrow will make it more dramatic.
So we'll go back in with our #4 brush and make some wrinkles on the outside of the eye, and also underneath.
While you've got your black paint, paint around your subject's nostrils to widen them, then add lines extending from the nostrils to the corner of each lip.
Step 3: Highlights
Now we'll do some highlights on the cheeks and nose. Use white paint and a medium brush, and add a highlight to the chin. Then, paint some green back in to create depth.
Add some highlight to the upper lip as well.
Step 4: Mouth Off
The last step for our basic monster is to add a mouth. Paint black or a darker green onto just the bottom lip.
This will create a basic monster. If you want to add more detail, follow the next steps.
Step 5: Gruesome Details
We'll add some sharp teeth to our monster with a number 4 brush and white paint. Then outline the teeth with a number 2 brush in black.
Now, paint some more white highlights around the face. And brush more detail around the brow.
Step 6: Scary Eyes
There's one more detail you can add, which is to paint monster eyes on the eyelids. Draw the outline of the eye with black paint. Then use red or any other color, and paint a round eyeball into each outline. For the whites of the eyes, use a pale yellow, and a number 2 brush. You can also use yellow, or white, to add some highlights to the eyeball.
