The training uniform for many Japanese martial arts is called gi. One is the jiu jitsu gi that must be worn properly along with its obi or belt.
How to do a jiu jitsu gi. Now, what we're going to talk about today is how to wear your gi, how to fasten your belt and how your gi should kind of sit and feel in your body, okay. So, jiu jitsu gi is slightly thicker than a karate gi or taekwondo gi.
The reason for that is because your opponent or yourself on your opponent will be grabbing hold of the gi in this position here, grabbing hold of the sleeves, you're getting a bit of a tussle up here too, so you need to be quite thick and durable so it doesn't rip and so you can get a good grip. Okay, the sleeves should be sitting just between the elbow and the wrist here so it's the perfect kind of size there. Again, like I said before, there'd be a grip to hold of and move up and down but there needs to be enough room for you to bend your arm and lift your arm up, okay, without it being too tight.
The trousers – they're thick and they have double plating on the knee here for thick endurance. You do spend quite a bit of time with your knees in jujitsu so that is going to get a little extra bit of protection from the material to yourself there. So, when we talk about the belt, in jujitsu, it's called an obi.
That is Japanese. I'm going to explain how to wear this now. So, take the belt, it's always the left over the right when it comes to the gi, okay.
If it's a long belt, take it around your body once until you end up with this position here with two ends of the belt. You're going to take the right one and you'll pass that under the left, you're then going to take the, what was the left, now to the right, underneath the belt, underneath both wraps of the belt to get this position here. Now, taking the right on top of the left and tucking it under, pull tight to finish the belt here or the obi, okay.
So, what you'll find now is that keeps everything nice and tight. It also is a representation of your grade, okay, very important. In competition, you might be given a different coloured belt to your opponent to identify the two people while they're tussling.
You'll notice that when Alexi moves here, it's still nice and static here so there's not much being pulled across. It allows him to execute moves such as a punch and a kick, okay. Comfortable, durable and fastened together with an obi or belt, okay, and that's how to do your jiu jitsu gi.
Hope you find that useful and that you choose the right one for you. Take care and good luck. See you next time. .
