Today, we are going to show you how you would learn to touch type on a keyboard. Most people use a keyboard during their everyday life, whether it be for internet browsing, word processing, and emailing. It is important for everyone to learn how to touch type correctly as this worthwhile skill will last a lifetime and ensure that by using all the fingers on both hands, that you increase your typing speed and therefore your production rates.

The standard keyboard is known as the QWERTY keyboard, and this is because the first six letters on the top left hand side contain these keys. So, what is touch typing? Well, it is when people use the keyboard to type without looking at the keys themselves. This can take several hours to learn and more to build up speed.

But once you know which fingers should be used for which keys, you will never look back. You should ensure that you're sitting correctly with your feet flat on the floor and your back supported by your chair. Your elbows should be close to your body.

First of all, you should place your fingers on what are known as the home keys. These are A, S, D, F, on the left hand side and, J, K, L, semi-colon, on the right hand side. If you feel the F and J keys with both index fingers, you will feel slight ridges.

These are designed for you to feel your way on these keys as a base, without the need to look. Once you can type the home keys without looking, you can then progress to learn the other keys on the keyboard. Your fingers should always be hovering over the home keys and move up or down depending on which key you need to press.
