How To Draw Anime Faces

I'm a co-founder of Sweatdrop Studios and I've been an illustrator in manga style for almost 15 years. Today, I'm going to show you how to draw some different manga faces. We're going to draw a character in a very cute, random, chibi style.

The face would be a bit like a baby's. If you draw the eyes about here, it's practically a circle with a little bit on top. It'd be quite round and soft.

It wouldn't have a pointy chin. It'd be almost like a circle. This is a very rough version of a chibi face.

Literally one sphere with a crosshair in the middle to help me place the eyes there and so on. When you're making a teenage face, it'd be a sphere and a half. Then add a little point at the bottom to give an impression of the chin.

Again, the curves with the eyes and the face. Remember the sphere? We do a crosshair again. The curve would be where the crosshair meets the edge of the sphere.

This helps shape the cheek area and then you can still put your eyes where the crosshair lies. You can give them a bit more of a nose than usual. Up here, we've used no nose at all.

No nose here. We've used a little dot for a nose here. We give a longer nose to denote that they're obviously a bit older and not as cottingley as this chibi style.

If I was going to draw an elderly person, I think I'd give them a soft face. I might give them a round face. I'd give them smaller eyes than these guys.

These guys are quite youthful, so their eye shape is a completely different shape than this character here. They're quite kindly. They have quite a smiley face.

They have a few lines, but not too many to show their age because of the wrinkles, a small nose, and maybe this little lady wears some glasses. She's got quite a short haircut. Again, this is the hairline.

I'm going to give her a crocked curly haircut. These guys have got quite long wispy hairstyles coming out here. This lady doesn't have very long hair, maybe she did in her youth.

We don't know. But her hairstyle is quite short and I think she's going to wear her scarf to keep herself warm, and that's how we draw various manga faces.
