Hi, my name is Laura Watton, my website is pinkapplejam.com. I am the co founder of sweatdrop studio and I have been an illustrator in manga style for almost 15 years.
Now I am going to show you how to do some manga hairstyles, streaks hairstyles for girls. Basically when you're drawing a hairstyle on any cartoon you have to think well where the hair grows from, if I rough out where our character's features are going to go, For example like so, if you can imagine that the fringe will come to about here where eyebrows are , if our character is going to have a fringe very well, it is going to have a fringe, we will have to remember to draw the outline of the forehead quiet close. Okay, so if you can imagine here, this is going to be the sphere of the skull and because otherwise the characters hair will end up very flat and it won't quite look right.
So you have to think right where is this hair coming from and then we've all got partings, so we have to mimic where our hair parting is going to go from, so I had to give this girl a blunt hair cut, I have started sprouting hair, I suppose is the word, out from the parting and then I am going to roughly draw the outline of the hair. Where it grows falling down the sides of the head. Can you see? I am just drawing some rough lines to emphasize where the hair would grow out from.
I think you get a more natural looking hair cut on your character instead of just trying to draw it flat and pretending you know where the hair is going to go immediately. So it's best to plot and it's always best to plan, I think with rough pencil lines underneath. Ok, so I can give this character a completely different hairstyle again I am going to rough out where I think the facial features would be, and this will be the shape of her head, so I am going to roughly draw a line here.
I am going to give this girl a bit of an emo hair cut I think. I prefer very long fringe the streaks on one side of her eyes even, how she is a little shy. Show she needs to hide in her fringe, so I am going to draw that over her eye, again you will have to think where the parting is going to be, I am going to give her a short haircut, using soft short strokes to emphasize the fact that maybe she has gelled her hair, I am also going to draw around this very rough skull idea, here this girl has got a very long fringe in the front, but the back is quiet short and choppy.
You can also use this character, use longer strokes perhaps something like that, but for now I think we are going to stick with some short choppy strokes, In comics, in manga especially a lot of the characters do have a lot more detail in the hair, and that mentions the strokes a bit more like this because it is easier to do so many fringes. Okay for the last character I am going to draw her face-on, that is you are looking directly at her face, I am not going to give this character a fringe, so where her fringe would be, we start here and finish here, so I am gong to ignore the area and draw the hair. Starting straight from the top of her forehead down to the side of her face, her parting is in the middle here. Again onwards to draw the hair curving out from the headline down the sides of her face and lets give it a little flick hair cut as well, I mean the world is yours really when it comes to hairstyles One of the main fun parts of drawing in manga style, you can pretty much adapt any hair cut fashion
