How to Draw in Manga Style: Illustrator Laura Watton demonstrates the two-step process to digitally drawing manga or anime style characters. Showcasing the elegant simplicity of manga style, she shows how to sketch and then ink the characters using a pen tablet and Adobe Photoshop.
Hi, my name's Laura Watton, my website is PinkAppleJam.com. I am a co-founder of Sweat Shop Studios and I've been illustrating in manga style for almost fifteen years.
This is how to draw very simple manga style, a chibi little boy and a chibi girl. Chibi is shorthand for child bodied, or just cute looking. So if we make a start, we're going to have the kids, the kids are about the same height so I'm just going to some rough sketches underneath and I'll be inking with a thicker brush over the top so you don't have to worry about details at this stage.
If we split the head up about here, and this is basically so that I can put the layouts of the face. I'm going to go into detail, better detail, about this later, so you don't have to worry about getting every single detail down right from the beginning. Alright, so one of the boys, sorry, one of the characters is a boy so I'm not going to give him anything girly like eyelashes or bows in the hair, so we're going to give him a bit of a spiky haired haircut.
There you are, like so, and then so the eye details, the little face details here, and for the girl I'm going to add similar details but make them more feminine, more curls, perhaps a little hair detail here, cute little face. Again, very rough, we'll add more details in a second. Alright, those are the faces roughed out.
Let's get cracking on some clothing details. Obviously, I'm not going to draw the little boy in a skirt but I'll give the little girl a dress and I'll give the little boy some shorts, and they're both discussing this comic that they've discovered recently which is obviously quite awesome, hence their excited expressions. Okay, I'll give the little boy some socks and shoes, and we're going to give the little girl some delicate little sandals.
Add a couple of details there, and you can see it's a pretty rough diagram. I'm going to change the color so that it doesn't interfere with the inks, the dark colors that I'm going to put on top. I'm just going to change my pen so that it gives a nice line quality, and as you can see, we can add more details and be a bit more gentle with the details.
I'm going to finish off the details. Okay, there you have it, very simple illustration, and that's drawing in manga style.
