Manga illustrator Laura Watton describes in this VideoJug video the varoius ways you can draw different noses for different manga characters.
Hi my name is Laura Watton, my website is pinkapplejam.com, I am a cofounder of sweatshop studio, and I've been illustrating in manga style for almost 15 years. This segment is going to discuss the different types of manga noses.
Basically if we're are going to use our sphere and crosshair again the eyes usually appear here, and the nose usually appears here. If we break that sphere into thirds, basically, it appears in between the 2nd and 3rd segment. Obviously it depends; your style may be different from the illustration I'm illustrating here.
I'm just going to show you some basic beginner tips so that you can add, and subtract and modify and experiment with it as much as you want. If I draw a regular face, regular chibi face, she quite cheruby, this character. Currently she's got no nose, this is a bit terrible - so if I draw a little dot in the middle.
To be honest, a lot of manga illustrations, the characters' noses are just dots. If you want to put a nostril there you can, that works for emphasizing cuteness in a character. Your character could be slightly older, studious; she could have a slightly longer nose.
This bit here, this little triangle, manga is very stylized, so, this bit would be to emphasize the other half of the nose. If I were going to deconstruct this nose it would basically be a triangle, I think. So you can add a nostril here to denote one side of the structure and then some shading on the other side can denote the depth of nose, I suppose, the height of the nose, coming from the face.
If you were to look at the nose from the side, it would look something like this -very pointy noses, with or without nostril. I think if you were going to draw a very baby face, a chibi nostril, it would look something like this, it would only be this big. So I think the cuter the character the smaller the nose, stereotypically.
And there are some very rough examples, depending on the type of character you're going to draw, all the different types of manga noses you could draw for all your different characters.
