In Japan, Chibi are child-like cartoons that are cute and full of innocence. You too can learn to draw Chibi with the help of Kyle the illustrator in this short, informative video.
Hi, I'm Kyle, I'm an illustrator and I'm going to take you through some tips on drawing manga and chibi. Okay, I'm going to show you how to do Chibi faces. I'm going to take you through a few different expressions here.
We've got the generic face there which isn't too far off the generic way to draw an anime character, you've got the eyes, only the eyes are a lot, lot, bigger. So I'm just going to, just to show you. Yes, as I said, the eyes are a lot, lot, bigger.
They're a little close together, not too much, still about an eye's width apart, but just a little bit. Okay. Now, another name for Chibi is superdeformed, which kind of refers to how much the expressions get completely whacked out and this is what I'm going to show you here.
So I'm going to show you a completely happy and excited character. The eyes become two big old chevrons. Some little lines just underneath there, absolutely straining with excitement there.
Simple shape for the mouth, a little turn up at either side. Show the tongue there. There's this expression that's led to people putting XD at the end of things on the internet because it kind of looks like this expression, if you're a nerd like me.
Anyway, I'm going to tidy that up just a little tiny bit. Now I'm going to move on to a really, really, angry character. So I'm just going to draw this little guy here.
Now again, the expression is going to be completely blacked out, the eyes are simplified, little tiny circles, no pupil or anything. Big, old, whatever color they shade the eyebrows are, make that, we'll just make this little symbol there about the same. So obviously, past me saying that, thinking you're obviously going to take things and apply them to a character you've already got.
If you just want to make up something of your own for a Chibi, that's cool. And this big old bit of nice shading just around the eyes, as though it's all bumpy and the guy just wants to do some herb. Just a simple line there.
It doesn't even make sense as a mouth anymore, but it still looks hilarious. Little sharp teeth like that, tongue down there, even if it goes past the jaw line. That can look funnier if you ask me, but to each their own.
Of course, the old favorite, again, just going right off the edge of the head, the old favorite, the old pulsing vein on the forehead. And last but not least, I'm just going to show you how to do an embarrassed character. Start off with a little, cheeky smile.
Now, he knows he's done something wrong and they're about to cuff him probably against this person. The eyes just two big old arches. A little bit of a mark either side of them just to show he's a little bit embarrassed.
Eyebrows are right up. And the old favorite, in manga, the big old sweat drop. You do have to do the sound effects.
Just a little. I've just got to tighten these up just a little bit, clean up the edges. And there you have your Chibi expressions. .
