How To Draw Manga Mouth

This VideoJug tutorial shows you how to draw manga faces, with the special effort made on teaching you how to draw the female manga mouth and the male manga mouth.

Hi, I'm Kyle, I'm an illustrator and I am going to take you through some tips on drawing manga and chibi. Okay, I'm going to show you how to draw a manga mouth, really not that hard at all, I've got the head already drawn here for you, if you haven't drawn before, nice and easy, big round circle, dividing line in the middle of that, it's nice to mark how or where the jaw bone and cheeks are going to be to either side, then you just draw in the eye line, not quite halfway up the sphere and that's about the line where the eye's going to be and the center of the ear. I'm just going to mark in, just quickly for you, where the rest of the face is going to be so it doesn't look too alone.

Okay, so you see where the nose comes down to, now the mouth will be just not too far away from the bump of the nose, not too close or up here or too far away, it's just about there. Sometimes it just fits, just nice on the tip of that circle, depends on what sort of character you're going for. With male characters just actually, the face is fairly neutral, you just want to put just a little smile on the character, it's very, very simple.

Obviously, you can put more complex or interesting expressions on if you like, but just for the purposes of this, I'll show you how to do neutral face, so a tense spring, line in like that, and just a little gap there, which actually just shows where's a slight point to the upper lip, and it's carrying on across. I don't want to make the mouth too wide. If you like, you can just put a little indenture to show the lower lip, and that is more or less what it takes on male characters often.

It's not always the case, but that's just how I just wanted to show you how to draw it. Okay, I'm just going to move to female character here, I'm just going to lock in where everything is on the face. And again, not too far away from the nose, not too close.

The lips on the female character will be, you know, a bit fuller, a little bit rounder. So I'm just going to start with the corner of the mouth there. It comes up a little bit, just a little dip there and out again to the side, and again if you want, you can put a little line underneath there just to show the lower lip.

I must go tighten both of these up a little bit, with a slightly darker pencil, just so we can see lines a little better. And that's how to draw the basic manga mouth. .
