How To Dress Like A Belly Dancer

Feeling exotic? Mysterious? Seductive? Want to express that in your clothes? Then dress like a belly dancer! Here's how.

Step 1: The Basic Costume

Take any long, flowy skirt, anything that makes you feel really feminine and add a belt. Then buy some beads and metal add-ons in any bead shop. Add them or have them added on you skirt & belt in any way you like & feel most comfortable with. Rather than keeping your skirt whole, maybe cut some lines up the side, add a little extra fabric. It's also really nice to weigh your belt down so that you've got some heaviness to your hips, and that will really connect you to all the moves that you're doing.

Then you find a bra that is really comfortable, and embellish it the same way you done for skirt & belt.

When you're thinking about how to put your costume together try adding elements that will capture the light and create that sense of sparkle, that magic that really goes along with the belly dance.

Step 2: Accessories

Big bracelets - you can find them in all kinds of places - just think funky – ethnic. Indian stores & flea markets are great for this. Bangles, things that have a little shake to them. Huge earrings. You really want the earrings to be out there. Have no qualms about putting them on and feeling good about them. Nice, big hoops, anything with dangle, it just adds that nice bit of exotic touch.
You should have something on your neck, something that gives you a little bit more jingle. Try to match it to your clothes - if you've got gold tones going on, you might want to go gold, but keep it light - you don't want to distract from all the jewels going on with the bra.

Step 3: Noisemakers

Fundamentals: finger cymbals. You can get these at any belly dance shop or order them online. Put them on your middle finger and your thumb, and you play while you're dancing.
The Shakers: they are really great for all the belly dance students out there. You can get them really inexpensively, and it can be part of your starter costume. You can take any skirt, tie this around it on your hips - you want to tie it really tight, because once you start shaking, it can fall down.
