How To Drum Fast

Hi, I'm Rick from the Music Workshop Company and I am going to show you some tips on how to drum. I'm now going to give you some tips on how to drum fast. Start slowly, okay? Take your high hat; as you notice here, my sticks are coming back quite a lot.

As you get quicker, okay, it's almost impossible to keep this level of repetition. So what I am asking you to do is to minimize your movements. Now, I am going to go from one extreme to the other here.

I'm going to start slow, and then I am going to go real fast. See the difference in where my stick ends up in comparison to playing slowly. Now, another way of playing fast is to double everything, okay? So you've got, these are single strokes because you hit the, you are hitting the high hat once, hit it twice by means of bounce.

Make sure your left hand can do the same thing. And then, you need to join it together. Now, the way you join it together is by starting with a single stroke roll.

Now take your hands and put the sticks down and go. Now for the doubles, okay, your wrists are doing exactly the same thing, it's just your fingers are allowing your sticks to bounce. So we're going to go at this speed.

Mechanically, I'm going to do the same thing, but I am going to double everything. So basically you are working less, but getting more. I can still drum at that same speed but with singles, but as you may be able to see, I am working a lot harder for it.
