In this very brief video tutorial, an expert on urban gardening explains how to preserve your excess herb crop via drying.
Hi. My name's John from Growing Life, London, UK, urban and indoor gardening specialists, and today we're going to talk briefly about how to dry fresh herbs at home. One of the simplest and certainly the cheapest way to dry herbs at home is to hang them upside down.
Now to do that, we want to simply take sections of our harvested herbs and tie them into little bundles. With the rosemary and thyme here, we're between eight to twelve sprigs per bundle. And we simply take a piece of gardening string, or jute, and tie a simple knot whether it be a bow or otherwise, around the harvest.
Having done this, it can very simply be hung. Now, you need to find a well-ventilated, dry space for hanging, for the drying process to be done quickly and efficiently. To say you will notice herb crop to herb crop does vary: some herbs will respond better to this method of drying than others.
For example, thyme and rosemary are perfect and will dry very easily like this. Other herbs, such as parsley, you might find, unless it's a very well ventilated and dry space, you will lose some of the color and the flavor. But this method of drying is very popular and has been used for centuries.
