How To Dry Oregano

This video shows the methods of drying oregano.

Hi, my name's John from Growing Life, London, UK urban and indoor gardening specialist, and today we're going to talk about how to dry oregano. Oregano can be dried in a number of ways. The simplest of which is simply to hang it.

If we're hanging oregano to dry it, we simply tie it together and maybe up to 8 sprigs of harvested oregano and hang it upside down within a dry well-ventilated space. Alternatively for larger amounts, you might want to use something such as this which is a home drying station. These harvested oregano cut approximately 4 to 6-inch lengths is simply positioned in single layers to allow for even air circulation and even drying throughout the chamber.

If you're using a fan-assisted oven or a food dehydrator, make sure you don't set the temperature any higher than 35 degrees. Above this, you'll actually destroy these central oils within the plant and the flavour. Once the oregano has dried, you'll be able to tell it's ready to be cold and stored.

When it crumbles in the fingers, it becomes brittle. At this point, as I say, let the oregano that's been in the heater chamber cool down before transferring it with extreme care to a new storage container, airtight, whether it be a heat-sealed pouch or a preserving jar. My name's John from Growing Life, London and that was a brief introduction on how to dry the herb oregano. .
