How To Elope Internationally
You're eloping and you have a destination. A destination that's out of the country. Can you pull it off? Can you make it legal? Can you make it happen? Sure you can! Just follow the VideoJug guide to eloping, international style!
-
Step 1:
-
Get Legal
-
If you decide to get married abroad, you'll want to make sure your marriage is legal in your home country. It varies from country to country, but generally, a marriage abroad is legal in your home country as long as it doesn't "contravene the marriage laws" of your home country. Your marriage also has to fulfill the legal requirements of the country in which you get married, so search online, talk to the embassy or consulate, and consider working with a family lawyer who handles international marriages to make sure you have your facts straight. Some countries require affidavits, birth certificates, and other documentation. Others have looser requirements. If you want to be 100% sure that your marriage is legal in your home country, and if you want to save yourself some time and money, considering having a quickie legal ceremony in your home country, and then having a ceremonial wedding at your international destination.
-
Step 2:
-
Get A Pro
-
Considering getting a professional on the ground at your destination to help you plan your ceremony and whatever extras you might want. You can find them online, or ask for recommendations from a good travel agent. Eloping is usually fairly simple, but you'll probably need an officiant, a place to do the ceremony, some flowers, and a place to eat afterwards, at the very least. Pulling this together is easy for someone who lives in the place you're getting married, and shouldn't be too expensive. If you're staying in a good hotel, you also may be able to use the concierge to help you with your plans. Just remember to try to find someone bilingual (in your language and the language of your destination country), and ask for and call references.
-
Step 3:
-
Get Married
-
That's it! You're good to go! Congratulations and bon voyage!
