How To Evolve Budew

Budew has two evolutions. In this step by step guide Charles Scott, administrator for the Pika Club, talks you through what you need to do to achieve them.

Method

Budew is number 406 in the National Pokedex, and is a Bud Pokémon of the Grass/Poison type. It was introduced in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. Budew evolves into Roselia, then into Roserade.

To evolve Budew into Roselia you need to evolve it with max Happiness rating during the daytime. Happiness is a number that is hidden from you, but it is tracked within the game. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum there is a Poketch application that will allow you to track your Pokémon’s happiness; if there are three hearts on the screen when you touch the Pokémon, its Happiness is high. In other games there is a person somewhere on the world map who will tell you how happy your Pokémon are.

If you keep your Pokémon in your party and walk around, you will gain a point of Happiness after a certain number of steps. If you level-up the Pokémon its Happiness rating will also increase. Feeding it vitamins that increase stats or berries that reduce stats can also increase its Happiness rating. If you equip the Soothe Bell item to your Pokémon it will increase the rate at which it gains Happiness; capturing a Pokémon using a Luxury Ball will apply the same modifier.

There are also things which decrease Happiness which you should avoid. Using Energy Powder, Energy Root, Heal Powder or Revival Herb, or letting your Pokémon faint during battle will all reduce your Pokémon’s Happiness.

Once your Pokémon has reached the required Happiness it will evolve at its next level increase, but only during the daytime; daytime is between 10 am and 6 pm on most games, and 10 am to 8 pm in some of the later games.

To evolve a Roselia into a Roserade you will need to give it a Shinny Stone.
