How To Feed Flowering Vegetable Plants
Feeding your flowering vegetable plants properly is vital if you wish to get the most out of your vegetable crop, whether it be tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, or aubergines. Tom Cole from Capel Manor College in London is going to show VideoJug how to get your plants bursting into life.
Step 1: What plants
Many feeds are sold for a particular plant such as tomatoes, but can be used on a variety of flowering plants that are grown in containers. These include cucumbers, peppers, courgettes, aubergines, and a varity of flowering pot plants.
Vegetable plant feed contains high levels of magnesium and nitrogen, which will encourage strong healthy growth, and high yields of full flavour fruit from your plant.
Step 2: When to feed
Apply your feed once a week, watering the plants every day as usual in between these times. Start to apply the feed once the plant's first truss has set.
Step 3: Measuring
Amounts vary from brand to brand so always check the gudielines. The average amount is one capfull to seven litres of water, with most watering cans being between 5 and 10 litres. This can water 2 or 3 large pots.
Step 4: Application
Mix the recommended amount of feed with water in a watering can. Give the water a stir to ensure a good, even solution.
Pour the water over the soil's surface area liberally, until it starts to pool at the top. Allow this to soak into the soil before watering further.
