A strength and conditioning coach discusses how to use a body mass index chart to determine your weight range, whether it's healthy, underweight or overweight.
Now, BMI stands for your body mass index. This is a very general kind of basic way of finding out if you're underweight, overweight or just about right. What you do, there's a chart you can get, and you put your age and weight and you have a look.
If you're male or female, have a look on the line to see if you're over or underweight. Now, BMI has changed in the last few years. They've actually come out with a new scale which also takes into account body types.
The new version takes into account your build because quite a few inaccuracies with the old version. For example, most professional athletes, people with odd weights -body builders for example - would come on the charts overweight when they're not overweight at all. Their body fats are actually incredibly low.
For the new version, which you should look for, takes into account if you're big boned or small boned or in the middle. And what they do is take a measurement around your wrist, then you look on the chart and work it out yourself. Now, if you want to have a more accurate way of finding out if you're under and overweight, doing a body fat measurement would be much more appropriate.
However, for kind of a very basic level, BMI is quite a good scale to work things out. .
