How To Fill A Sheet Cake: ShopCountryKitchen.com provides a video on how to fill a sheet cake. Learn how to put the filling into a sheet cake with this charming film here at VideoJug, and visit ShopCountryKitchen.com for more details on your favourite confectionary products.

You Will Need

  • Baked Cake
  • Cake Slicer
  • Cake Filling
  • Sideless Cookie Sheet
  • Spatula

Step 1:

Allow Cake to Cool

Allow baked cake to cool completely.

Step 2:

Remove Dome

If your cake has developed a dome while baking, use a cake slicer to level it off.

***Tip A good tip to remember while using a cake slicer is to cut at an angle to prevent the cake from tearing.***

Step 3:

Lift Cut Portion Off

Lift the cut portion of the cake off with a sideless cookie sheet.

Step 4:

Adjust Cake Slicer

Step 5:

Cut Cake in Half

Cut the sheet cake in half horizontally. Be sure to cut at an angle to prevent tearing.

Step 6:

Cut Top of Sheet Cake in Half

Cut the top of the sheet cake in half using a knife with a long serrated edge. A bread knife can be used, but it may not slice as evenly.

Step 7:

Remove Half of Cake

Remove one half of the cake with a sideless cookie sheet and set aside.

Step 8:

Squeeze Fillling onto Cake and Smooth

Squeeze filling on the cake and use a spatula to spread. Leave a half an inch from the edge to ensure the filling stays inside the cake.

Step 9:

Replace Cake Top

Place the top half back on the side that has just been filled.

Step 10:

Repeat with Other Side of Cake - Remove Half of Cake

Remove the other half of the cake with a sideless cookie sheet and set aside.

Step 11:

Squeeze Filling onto Cake and Smooth

Squeeze filling on the cake and smooth it out with a spatula. Remember to leave a half an inch from the side to ensure the filling stays inside the cake.

Step 12:

Replace Cake Top

Place the top half gently back on the cake.

I don't have a fancy cake slicer like that and I've never needed one. I split cakes with dental floss held tightly between my hands. That works great!

There is no need to half the top layer, just use same technique with the cookie sheet or other cake board to lift(slide off whole top layer.

It's a clear and simple technique for filling a sheet cake. I often worried about breaking the cake when I transferred it onto the filled bottom layer--slicing it in half makes things so much easier. Thank you!
