VideoJug presents a fool-proof guide on how to fill your washer tank quickly and effectively. Have the cleanest windscreen on the road with our help.

Step 1: Secure the car

Park your car on a level surface. Apply the parking-brake. In a manual car shift into first gear.In an automatic vehicle put the gear-stick into the parking position.

Step 2: Open the bonnet

In an automatic vehicle put the gear-stick into the parking position. Release the bonnet using the lever in the car's interior. Move the bonnet-catch for final release. Lift the bonnet and locate the prop rod. Secure the bonnet with the rod.

Step 3: Locate the washer fluid tank

Look for a large, transparent plastic tank containing blue windscreen washer fluid. The lid is usually labelled with words or a symbol showing two spurts of water. The location of the windscreen washer tank differs between models. If you cannot clearly identify the reservoir, don't add any fluid.
Consult your car's manual about details of location.

Step 4: Check the fluid level

The level should be checked regularly and always be above the fill line printed on the tank.
On some models the tank's capacity may be indicated.
The fluid level can usually be seen through the transparent container.

Step 5: Open the washer fluid tank

Open the washer-fluid tank by pulling off its lid.

Step 6: Insert the fluid

Add the windscreen-washer fluid using a funnel. A useful tip:
Washer fluid contains detergent to clean your windscreen.
Plain water should only be used when washer fluid is not available.
In cold weather, use a solution containing antifreeze to prevent it from freezing on the windscreen and in the tank.
Remember to fill up with washer fluid regularly when checking the car's fluids, and always fill to maximum level.

Step 7: Close washer tank

Remove the funnel and press the cap firmly back on the tank.

Step 8: Close the bonnet

Close the bonnet – make sure it's properly shut.

Step 9: Clean windscreen

Clean the windscreen with the wipers. It is essential for safe driving that you have a clear vision on the road.

Well there isn't much to say about this video, nothing bad but then not a lot else! - DO note the pouring technique from the container (on it's side - much better controlled, doesn't need a funnel) and also use washer fluid that smells of alcohol, usually blue in colour as well. If it just has detergent in it, it can form a sludgy algae residue over time which clogs the pump. It's worth getting the best stuff - don't be tempted to use washing-up liquid. And I LOVED the post by McNumptyPants :) another mistake I've seen is people putting washer fluid in the radiator overflow tank on Japanese cars, since it's usually translucent and has a push-on lid...
