As a long-term console operator, I don't advice locking on the fuel nozzle. In fact, I'm not sure it's even legal to leave any fuel (not just petrol) flowing unattended (while cleaning a windscreen or whatever) in Australia. I've seen several accidents happen that way not least of which is the fuel not shutting off when it should.

Umm, actually using a higher octane fuel giver more power and economy. With a higher octane fuel,the combustion in the cylinder takes place at a slightly cooler temperature and with more force,providing a cleaner burn. This means more efficiency from your engine. Also,it may be bad to put diesel in a petrol tank,but it is FAR more damaging to put petrol in a diesel engine.

There was no mention of emptying the hose. Just lift up the hose and empty the fuel from the hose when you have stopped filling. The other thing worth mentioning is that you should not leave your car unlocked when going to pay for your fuel. Insurance will not cover you in case of theft if you do. Otherwise, it was so complicated. All that hand washing etc...

It is not acceptable in the U.K. for pump nozzles used on Petrol to have nozzles that may be locked open. The Environment agency also discourages this on Diesel

Please stop spreading this myth. Putting super-unleaded into a car that doesn't need it will not improve performance or lead to better mpg. The octane indicates how likely a fuel will auto-ignite, and has no bearing on fuel performance. The myth comes about because very high-performance cars are *designed* to run on higher-octane fuels than normal - not because the higher octane increases performance, but because a lower octane fuel would result in knocking with the compression used. Using a lower octane fuel than designed leads to reduced performance (the engine compensates to prevent knocking), but using a higher octane fuel than is required is just a waste of money.

In general you shouldn't put petrol into a diesel car, although it is true that in extreme cold weather some car manufacturers suggest using a little petrol - it compensates for the extremely low temperature. However, as far as I know diesel sold in extremely cold areas is normally already thinned out slightly anyway - so it shouldn't be necessary. Certainly in most areas of the world it never gets cold enough to be a problem anyway with a modern diesel engine.
