How To Find A Cancer Support Group

The secret to having a successful experience with a cancer support group is finding the right support group for you. This video from VideoJug will show you how to do it, based on advice from cancer survivors.

Step 1: Self Diagnosis

Consider the stage and type of your cancer so you can decide if you want to join a support group that has members who either have a prognosis of surviving cancer or a prognosis of possibly passing away in the near future.

Step 2: Find Your Kind

General cancer support groups are good but many find it's better to find a group that specializes in your type of cancer.

Step 3: Talk To Your Doctor

Talk to your doctor about where you can find a cancer support group good for you. Also ask your local hospital for recommendations.

Step 4: Search Online

Use the Internet to find cancer support groups in your area.

Step 5: Select Your Style

Select which style of support group will work best for your personality. If you're a private person, you may want to join a "one on one" style group.

Step 6: Make A Judgment Call

Before going to your first meeting, call the group's organizer. This way, you can get a better feel if the group is right for you.

Step 7: Give And Get

Half of the satisfaction of joining a support group is receiving support, the other half is giving support. Remember this and you will have a more fulfilling experience.

Step 8: Get Cancer, Get A Friend

Thousands of cancer patients have found new, best friends they never thought they'd have because of their experience with cancer together. Cancer can not only bring people together but it can bring you emotionally closer to those around you.
