How To Find A Tattoo Artist

The tattoo artist can be the difference between beautiful body art and a bad mistake, the difference between pleasure and pain. Watch this film from VideoJug and follow this step by step guide to help you choose your tattoo artist wisely.

Step 1: Do Your Homework

This is permanent body art; there's no room for error. When looking for a tattoo artist, you've got to do some homework. Talk to people who have good tattoos and find out where they got their work done. Read tattoo magazines and check the internet. Find out which artists and shops have won awards and have a solid reputation.

Step 2: Shop Inspection

Never book an artist without visiting their shop. The online portfolio may be amazing, but the only way to know if you should let this person put a needle in your skin is to check out the shop in person. Ask some questions and inspect the premises. Find out how equipment is sterilized and what methods are used to prevent cross-contamination, that's spreading germs and blood-born pathogens from one person to the next. Make sure the shop is clean.

Step 3: Portfolio

Peruse the artist portfolio to see what the artist has to offer and make sure the artist is experienced in the specific style of tattoo you're after.

Step 4: Conversation

Have a conversation with the potential artist. Ask about his or her training and any apprenticeships. Discuss your design. Try to get a sense of their skills and their personality. Is this someone you feel at ease with?

Step 5: Book It!

If you've found a talented, skilful artist in a spit-spot shop, book an appointment for your ink.
