Step 1: You will need
- An internet connection
- An MP3 player
- A USB cable
Step 2: Find a podcast
If you do not know a specific podcast you would like to download, you will need to go to a podcast search engine. The most popular is itunes, but despite the name, you do not have to have an iPod and use itunes to download a podcast. Once you are on the podcast search engine, put in the keyword you are looking for. A list of podcasts that feature your chosen keyword in their description will display on the screen, usually with a brief synopsis of each podcast to help you choose.
Step 3: Choose a podcast program
A podcast is the internet equivalent of a magazine subscription. By subscribing to a podcast, each new episode will be automatically delivered to your computer when it is available. To subscribe, you will need to download a 'podcast aggregator' program to your computer, which will collect new episodes into one place at the touch of a button. These can be found for free on the internet, such as podnova, or in some cases are built into programs you already have, such as Internet Explorer 7 or itunes.
Step 4: Subscribe to a podcast
Copy the subscription internet address of the podcast into your podcast aggregator. The subscription link will either be marked by the logo of your podcast aggregator, which when clicked will automatically subscribe you, or will be available to copy and paste into your aggregator manually.
Step 5: Listening to a podcast
Once downloaded onto your computer, you can listen to a podcast either through your computer, using programs such as Windows Media Player and itunes, or copy the podcast via a USB connection to your portable mp3 player.
